Analyses of an Urnfield genome

Below are the results of analyses of the sample I0099 from the late Bronze Age Urnfield culture in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The sample is dated to 1113–1021 BC.

I0099 belonged to Y haplogroup R1a1a1b1a2-Z280 and mitochondrial haplogroup H23.

Like the R1a1a1-M417* German Corded Ware sample I0104, I0099 had a significant amount of the K12b Gedrosia component. This again raises the question of how the Baltic and Slavic populations of modern-day Europe, which have the highest frequencies of R1a in Europe, can also have the smallest amounts of the Gedrosia component in Europe. I think that the prehistoric R1a populations to the east of Germany had smaller amounts of the Gedrosia component, like the R1a1-M459* sample I0061 from northwestern Russia, and that modern-day Balts and Slavs are derived primarily from these more eastern R1a populations. I think that the prehistoric R1a people of Germany, like I0104 and I0099, absorbed additional amounts of the Gedrosia component from higher-Gedrosia R1b people, just as the Y hg I people of the Unetice culture did.
